Buffalo cupcake shop owners to compete on Cooking Channel

Fans of Fairy Cakes, the cupcake shop on Parkside Avenue, should tune into the Cooking Channel at 10 p.m. today.

That's when co-owners Mo Torpey and Kelly Audette will compete on the show "Cupcake Showdown," which pits pastry chefs of all backgrounds and experience levels against one another in a no-sprinkles-barred competition.

The Buffalo-based team caught the eyes of producers when they sent in a cheeky audition tape for the competition, which was filmed in Toronto in July.

"We sent in a hilarious audition for the show. It even had a live chicken involved," Audette said in a phone interview Tuesday. "I'm nervous just to be on TV tonight."

Here's how the competition runs, according to the Cooking Channel website:

"First, the competitors must make their best dessert incorporating one mystery ingredient. After three distinguished judges eliminate one competitor, the finalists must make creations based on a theme. One baker will be crowned the champion, winning bragging rights and $10,000."

For those who don't have access to the channel, Fairy Cakes (289 Parkside Ave.) will be holding a viewing party starting at 9:15 p.m. Call 688-0361 for more info.
