Sidelines: Hoop tournaments highlight upcoming week

Plenty of stirring takes place in high school basketball in the week after Christmas. It’s a time for travel and tournaments. Some of the other school sports will be resting for the start of the New Year.

Here are some highlights:

• On Wednesday, Park – the top-ranked large school in boys basketball – goes to Elmira to play Southside, while No. 2 Canisius draws Our Lady of Mount Carmel (Md.). They are all part of the Josh Palmer Fund Elmira Holiday Inn Classic. Wednesday is also the day that the Maryvale Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament begins. The field also includes Hamburg, Niagara-Wheatfield and Cleveland Hill.

Bishop Timon-St. Jude won’t waste any time in hitting the road after the holiday. The Tigers will play La Salle Academy in Rhode Island on Tuesday. On that same day, the Five Guys Holiday Tournament gets underway. Williamsville East will take on St. Mary’s of Lancaster, while Williamsville North goes up against Emerson.

One of the highlights of the Southern Tier season begins Thursday, when the IAABO Holiday Classic takes place. Such teams as Olean, Franklinville, Chautauqua Lake and Allegany-Limestone are part of the eight-team field.

• In girls basketball, No. 1 Cardinal O’Hara heads down the Thruway to Syracuse on Thursday to take part in the Bishop Ludden Tournament. The Hawks will play Wahconhah on Thursday night, and then take on either Bishop Ludden or Fredonia on Friday.

Some Buffalo schools match up on Monday in the Harvey Austin Tournament. Bennett takes on Tapestry while McKinley faces WNY Maritime.

On Wednesday, Sacred Heart begins its tournament with a game with Starpoint. Clarence takes on Nardin in the other side of the bracket.

• A pair of out-of-town teams arrive for boys hockey matchups on Tuesday afternoon. McQuaid of Section V takes on Williamsville East. A couple of hours later, I-Pelham goes up against Niagara-Wheatfield.

• Two wrestling tournaments will be held on Thursday. One has a long tradition, while the other is just getting started. The 49th annual Akron Varsity Holiday Tournament will be staged as will the Holiday Viking Dual Meet Tournament at Grand Island.
