Eugene M. Manning, of Blasdell, who was honored for heroism during a 38-year career as a Buffalo firefighter, died Dec. 14 under hospice care in Winter Haven, Fla. He was 87.
A Buffalo native, Mr. Manning was a graduate of Burgard High School, where he studied automotive technology. He was a post-World War II veteran of the National Guard.
During his career as a firefighter, he was attached to Truck 10 in South Buffalo.
As a young adult, Mr. Manning wrestled and trained as a professional in the Buffalo area. He also was a longtime member of Club Lorelei and was known for his knowledge of World War II history and lore, as well as old Hollywood movies and actors.
His wife of 58 years, the former Gladys P. Donovan, died in 2009.
Survivors include a fiance, Beverly Elmer; three daughters, Kathleen Arcara, Linda Galley and Tracy Crawford; a son, Richard; one brother, Bruce; 10 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in Our Mother of Good Counsel Catholic Church, 3688 South Park Ave., Blasdell.
