The U.S. world junior team will have two ties to Buffalo.
Youngstown native Joe Cecconi and Sabres prospect Casey Fitzgerald will represent the United States in the world junior championships. USA Hockey named its 23-man roster Saturday, and the two defensemen made the cut.
"The talent level in the United States is among the best in the world, and the difficulty we had identifying this year's roster speaks to that," said General Manager Jim Johannson. "These players earned their way on to this roster, and we're looking forward to the tournament getting underway."
The United States opens the world juniors Monday against Latvia. The tournament, being held in Toronto and Montreal, will run until Jan. 5.
The 19-year-old Cecconi is in his second year at the University of Michigan. Fitzgerald, also 19, is in his second season at Boston University. The Sabres selected him in the third round of this year's NHL Draft.
