Man dies after being stricken while driving

WHEATFIELD - A North Tonawanda man was stricken ill at the wheel of his car Friday and was pronounced dead in Mount St. Mary's Hospital, State Police said.

The 47-year-old man was driving near the intersection of Lockport and Ward roads in Wheatfield about 1:20 p.m. when his vehicle ran off the road and struck a tree, according to Trooper James O'Callaghan, State Police spokesman.

"We believe the operator had a medical issue," O'Callaghan said. "The collision wasn't the cause of the death."

No one else was hurt in the accident. Bergholz volunteer firefighters responded to the scene.
