We must not give Uber, Lyft special privileges
Ride-hailing companies should not be permitted to operate in Western New York. These and other “sharing economy” companies, such as Airbnb, simply use a website or mobile app to hide the fact that they are circumventing regulations and therefore operating illegally. If a taxi or lodging business wants to operate in Western New York, there are already registration and licensing procedures in place that they can follow. Existing businesses are expected to follow these rules, and companies like Uber and Lyft do not deserve special privileges.
I urge my fellow Western New Yorkers to learn the facts about companies like Uber, Lyft and Airbnb. The book “What’s Yours Is Mine: Against the Sharing Economy,” by Tom Slee, provides a detailed discussion of these types of illegal businesses and describes the dangers they pose to communities. For the record, I have no connection to any business faced with unfair competition from these kinds of operations.
