Police are looking for the driver of a vehicle involved in a hit and run that killed a 73-year-old Town of Tonawanda man.
The early morning accident occurred Nov. 4 when James Hemperly was crossing the street in the vicinity of Delaware Road and Liston Street, police said. He was struck around 7:30 a.m. by an unknown vehicle and left writhing in the street, said Capt. Joseph Carosi. Passing motorists noticed the injured man and notified police, Carosi said.
"He was in clear pain, that's for sure," said Carosi. "But he was alert and conscious and talking to officers. He did not even see the car that struck him."
Hemperly, who lived alone, was walking back from Dash's when the accident occurred, Carosi said.
Hemperly was transported to the hospital, where police said he died Dec. 5.
"He sustained a severe leg injury in addition to internal injuries," Carosi said. "He never was released from the hospital."
Police believe the vehicle was traveling south on Delaware Road and sustained damage to its passenger side.
"We're hoping that people may have heard of some unexplained damage to vehicles or know someone who quickly had some damage repaired on their vehicle," Carosi said.
