Anna Martin, retired teacher for Buffalo School District

Anna Martin, a retired Buffalo School District teacher, died Tuesday in her Buffalo home following a short illness. She was 83.

Born in Lackawanna,  the former Anna Cathey moved to Buffalo with her family when she was 4 years old. She was a graduate of Hutchinson Central High School.

Before becoming a teacher in the Buffalo Public School System, Mrs. Martin worked as an accountant for New York Telephone Co. and a teller for Liberty and Erie County Savings banks.

She originally joined the school district as an account clerk and decided to continue her education, earning bachelor's and master's degrees from SUNY Buffalo State.

In 1995, She retired from teaching to care for her husband, Louis B. Martin, who predeceased her after 49 years of marriage.

Mrs. Martin was a member of Liberty Missionary Baptist Church and, most recently,  Mount Olive Baptist Church.

She also was a member of the Xi Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, National Educators and the William-Emslie YMCA Senior Center.

She enjoyed reading, sewing and travel.

Survivors include two sons, Preston and Louis Jr.; and a daughter, Karen.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at noon Wednesday  in Mount Olive Baptist Church, 701 E. Delavan Ave.
