Warm the children helps more than 450 in the Southtowns

More than 450 children have been assisted through this year's Warm the Children program that provides warm clothes to children in need.

Volunteer shoppers met parents, grandparents and foster parents from 195 families at Sears in McKinley Mall recently to outfit them with jackets, coats, boots, pajamas and sweaters. The families are from Hamburg, Blasdell, Angola, Eden, North Collins, Evans, Derby and Brant.

“I’ve never spent $200 all at one time on clothing for my family!” one mother told volunteers.

Warm the Children is a program led by the Rotary Club of Hamburg, with assistance from the Town of Hamburg Lions Club, Evans Bank and Sears in McKinley Mall. The Rotary works with school districts, agencies like the Salvation Army and local churches to identify families in need. Warm the Children, in its 10th year, relies  on donations from the community.

“One hundred percent of all tax-deductible contributions go toward the purchase of new clothing,” said program coordinator, Elizabeth Angelbeck

Donations may be made to Warm the Children Fund at Evans Bank, 5999 S. Park Ave., Hamburg, N.Y., 14075.
