The state Health Department has extended from Thursday until Saturday the deadline to sign up on the NY State of Health exchange for insurance that takes effect on Jan. 1.
The department said it is granting the two-day extension to people who don’t have health insurance, or who have coverage that expires at the end of the month, because of the high volume of activity on its website and at its call center in recent days as Thursday's deadline loomed. The department has offered similar extension periods in 2013, 2014 and 2015.
State health officials said 55,000 people have renewed their insurance or enrolled in new coverage through the exchange over the past three days, but the department did not report how many people have signed up since the open enrollment period for 2017 began Nov. 1.
The final deadline for individuals to enroll in private health insurance remains Jan. 31. Enrollment on the small-business exchange, as well as for Medicaid, Child Health Plus and the Essential Plan, runs year-round. For more information visit www.nystateofhealth.ny.gov or call 1-855-355-5777.
