Pastor Rodena Washington, active in religious work

Pastor Rodena Washington, active in religious work, died unexpectedly Nov. 27 in her Buffalo home. She was 62.

Born in Independence, La., she attended schools in Louisiana and attended Southern University in Baton Rouge, La.

Ms. Washington came to Buffalo in the 1970s. A certified nursing assistant, she worked with Child & Family Services.
Part of a deeply religious family, her father was a church elder and five of her brothers and sisters are pastors. She sang with her siblings when she was young and was a founding member of the FAVVA Gospel Singers in Buffalo, a community gospel chorus.

She was ordained an elder in 2011 and became a pastor in 2015 when she founded her own organization, Sheep’s Cry Ministry.

Known to family and friends as Dena, in addition to singing and devotional activities, she enjoyed cooking.

Survivors include a son, Auzandaa D. Sr.; a daughter, Tina Renee Davis; her mother, Elnora; four brothers, Rev. Frank Jr., Pastor Samuel Sr., Rev. Keith, Parnell and Artis; three sisters, Pastor Clementine Miller, Pastor Lucy Hutcherson and Jessie Abbott; and seven grandchildren.

Services were led by her brother, Pastor Samuel Washington Sr., last Friday in Jordan River Missionary Baptist Church, 440 Leroy St.
