Fan hopes flag blessed by the pope will help Bills get to Super Bowl

Would it take a miracle for the Bills to make it back to the Super Bowl?

Probably.

But if the Bills do return to the Super Bowl someday, you might think of Nicholas Iacono and Pope Francis.

Iacono, a Williamsville native and a sophomore at Duquesne University, made sure to pack his Bills flag so he could cheer on his hometown team — even while studying abroad in Rome.

"My classmates know I am passionate about the Bills and the City of Buffalo," Iacono wrote in an email. "They have never seen anyone so passionate about a sports team or a city before, and I told them, 'It’s just something no one else will understand, living in Buffalo, N.Y.' ”

When asked to bring his most valuable items to be blessed by Pope Francis during a papal audience Nov. 23 in St. Peter’s Square, the first thing he grabbed was his Bills flag.

"My first instinct was to bring my flag because the first thing I thought of was home," Iacono wrote.

The pope blessed the items in the audience, including the Bills flag.

"Maybe they will win it soon because I got my flag blessed," Iacono wrote. "That would be a miracle."
