Buffalo ranks as the country's third-best college town among midsize cities, according to the website Wallet Hub.
The rankings of 415 cities were based on 26 measures of costs, social factors and academic and economic opportunities. Buffalo got the third-best score in the broad cost category among all cities; it was 104th in "social environment" and 88th in academics and job opportunities.
Buffalo's overall rank nationally was 33rd.
The top large city (population 300,000+) in the rankings was Atlanta, followed by Austin, Pittsburgh, New Orleans and Columbus. The top small cities (<125,000 population) were Oxford, Ohio; East Lansing, Mich.; West Lafayette, Ind.; Athens, Ohio; and Amherst Center, Mass.
The other midsize cities in the top five were Gainsville, Fla.; Cincinnati, Orlando and Salt Lake City.
