The Audubon branch of the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library will hold a beginners chess workshop for elementary school age children from noon to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18 at 350 John James Parkway, Amherst.
Children seeking to participate must know how all the pieces on a chess board move and how they capture other pieces to be eligible to participate. Admittance is free with a library card. Online registration at Knightof64@yahoo.com also is required by Thursday, Dec. 15.
Each student will play three to four games under tournament conditions. U.S. Chess Federation rules will be enforced during the tournament. Trophies will be awarded to the champion in each section and medals will be given to those who score 2.5 points.
Participants are required to bring a Staunton style chess set and algebraic chess board to the tournament.
