From the Home Front by Susan Martin: Wreaths in fine form

I tend to stay on the traditional side when it comes to Christmas wreaths, but I always like to check out the unique materials that go into more unconventional wreaths created for the holidays – and beyond.

Look on Etsy and you will find hanging wreaths fashioned from sheet music, burlap, baseballs, pearls, wine corks, fluffy cotton in cotton bolls (pods) and more.
Martha Stewart’s website shows wreaths designed using tapioca wood flowers, clippings of bay laurel or rosemary, jewelry-size boxes wrapped in weatherproof wrapping paper, gingerbread cutouts and holiday cards.

On Pinterest, at craft shows, in specialty stores or elsewhere, you can spot wreath forms covered with small plastic toys, dog bones, cut-up striped tube socks, seashells, old kitchen utensils and photographs in small frames.

And Better Homes and Gardens, bhg.com, shows how you can create a wreath from flea market picture frames, ribbon, a snowflake ornament and a little greenery.
Crafty types dream up all sorts of ideas for making and decorating wreaths. But if you’re in the market for an unusual ready-made wreath, here is just a sampling:

Ten Thousand Villages features a wreath made from 3-inch Mayan dolls, handcrafted in wood and fabric by women artisans in Guatemala. Visit the website, tenthousandvillages.com or the store at 5596 Main St., Williamsville, where it sells for $53.99.

Pier 1 sells a 14-inch wreath White Faux Fur Wreath, punctuated with a single silver snowflake ($19.95 online only). There’s also a 9-inch wreath ornament of white feathers ($8.95).

Williams-Sonoma Home (williams-sonoma.com) sells the 16-inch Silver Jingle Bell Wreath crafted from silver bells of various sizes and accented with a red grosgrain bow, $49.95. Its description: “It evokes the merry tradition of journeying through snow-covered countryside to share good times with family and friends.”
The company also offers a 24- or 28-inch wreath made from magnolia leaves coated in gold lacquer ($164.95 to $249.95).

Plow & Hearth stocks a 20-inch Metal Holly Christmas Wreath made of metal leaves with berry accents by artisans in Bali. Regularly priced at $79.95, it was on sale for $49.88 on plowhearth.com earlier this week.
