Mexican barred for life from U.S. held at Peace Bridge

A 38-year-old Mexican citizen who had been deported from the U.S. was arrested Wednesday at the Peace Bridge after customs officers said he produced a fake Arizona driver's license in bid to enter Canada.

Jose Salazar Estrada was charged with re-entry after removal and false claim to U.S. citizenship by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers.

Estrada presented an Arizona driver's license and claimed to be a U.S. citizen, officers said. When asked for addition identification, Estrada presented an Arizona voter registration card and was referred for secondary inspection.

Officers discovered Estrada had been previously arrested and convicted of domestic assault and alien smuggling.

Customers officer said Estrada has been removed five separate times and was barred for life from the U.S.

Estrada, who is in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, appeared Thursday before a federal magistrate.
