A new venue for music events at Venu on Chippewa

A new music venue – or Venu – has opened on West Chippewa Street.

In the setting formerly occupied by McMonkey’s, Lux, Pure and Level, Venu will offer what Assistant Manager Timothy Walton calls “a Vegas-style concert experience,” one centered on but not limited to Electronic Dance Music (EDM) events.

The room, at 75 W. Chippewa St., will hold between 500 and 700 patrons and offer "state-of-the-art lights and sound, a safe environment, and big city-style bottle service, with some reserved tables,” according to Walton.

He spoke at a Buffalo City Council meeting  Tuesday, seeking approval for Venu’s dance permit.

Walton took pains to make it clear that Venu will not be a nightclub or conventional bar, but will be open solely for ticketed events.

“We will only be open for concerts,” he said. “This is not a weekend-only thing, either – we will be open whenever the touring artists we are booking come through town, whether that’s a Tuesday or a Saturday. The good news is, Buffalo is full of people who come out and support music no matter what the night of the week happens to be.”

Walton describes Venu’s layout as “an open two-story set-up, where people on the second floor can look down and over the dance floor and stage area, very much in the style of shows you see in cities like Las Vegas and Miami.” He also spoke of Venu’s commitment to live music in general, beyond the EDM that will form the core of the entertainment. “We’ll have bands in all kinds of genres, from alternative to country,” Walton said.

Venu celebrated its grand opening with a dance-themed concert on Oct. 12, featuring Vegas-based DJ 3Lau before what Walton described as an enthused crowd.

“The feedback so far has been incredibly positive, particularly within the Buffalo Rage Community,” a close-knit community of EDM DJs, promoters and fans that employs social media to stay connected, share opinions and hype approaching area shows that fit the genre.

On Dec. 10, Venu will host a performance by New Jersey-based DJ 4B, and on New Year’s Eve, Toronto Raptors DJ 4 Korners, with guest DJ RanKan will perform. Ticketing for Venu will be handled by
