Olean man to repay $67,000 in biggest Cattaraugus County welfare fraud case

LITTLE VALLEY – Shawn Chastain, 40, of Olean, has been ordered to repay the Cattaraugus County Social Services Department the $67,282.69 in welfare benefits he illegally obtained for over four years, District Attorney Lori Pettit Rieman reported.

Chastain was ordered to make the repayment following a County Court restitution hearing linked to his recent conviction on second-degree welfare fraud, second-degree grand larceny and four counts of first-degree offering a false instrument for filing, according to the prosecutor.

Chastain was indicted late last year for the largest welfare fraud ever uncovered in the county's history, according to Pettit Rieman.

He was convicted of illegally obtaining day care assistance, Medicaid, heading assistance and food stamps illegally between April 2010 to September 2014, according to the prosecutor. Chastain could not be reached to comment on the court ordered restitution.
