Beer news from Buffalo Brewing Co., Big Ditch, Hamburg Brewing Co., Five & 20

Buffalo Brewing Company adds beers, hours

Larkinville’s newest brewery, Buffalo Brewing Company (314 Myrtle Ave.), has two new beers - 1901 and 1910.

1901 is an India Pale Ale clocking in at 7 percent ABV. The beer weighs 92 IBUs (International Bittering Units). That is an intensely high bitterness level, so fans of hoppy and bitter IPAs will be in for a treat.

1910, a Czech style Pilsner, has 5 percent ABV and only 33 IBUs. Czech-style pilsners differ from the more classic German pilsner in that they typically have a touch of sweetness and complex malt character.

The brewery has also filling crowlers - 32-ounce sealed cans - which are a much cheaper alternative to glass growlers.

Along with the new beers come new hours - Buffalo Brewing Company is adding Thursdays hours opening from 4 to 8 p.m. Call 868-2218.

Two new beers from Big Ditch
Big Ditch Brewing Company's latest two beers already are on tap. Fresh Baked is assistant brewer Dave O’Connor’s recipe to mimic the delicious flavors of an oatmeal cookie. The beer is brewed with chocolate malt, toasted English brown malt and in-house-toasted oats. The brewers then add cinnamon and vanilla. This beer was also featured during the launch of a new Wegmans Pub.

The brewery also has a new entry in its Innovation series of beers; a beer made from 100 percent New York state-grown pale malt barley from New York Craft Malt. The hops are New York State-grown as well - from Koester Hops and Willet Hop and Grain - and the beer features Centennial, Cascade, Chinook and Alpharoma hop varieties.

Big Ditch is at 55 E Huron St. Call 854-5050.

Five & 20 releases Funky Cherry Beer
Five & 20 Spirits and Brewing (8398 US-20, Westfield) has added another notch to its barrel-aged beer belt. This time around, the beer has an element of funk. (Drink That) Funky Cherry (Whit Boy) is a blended beer, part of which was aged in red wine barrels with Brettanomyces (wild yeast strain), part on sweet cherries, and part on sour cherries. The parts were then blended together. Five & 20 is selling this latest entry into its Tier 3 series of beers by the bottle at the brewery. It can also be found on draft in some bars surrounding Erie, Pa. The cost is $12 for a 750 ml bottle. Call 793-9463.
