A driver died and his passenger was rescued in a fiery rollover crash Thursday morning on a hilly road in Colden, according to State Police.
Tristan C. Pleace, 18, of Arcade died at the scene, said Trooper James O'Callahan.
Hunter J. Delia, 18, of Yorkshire was pulled to safety by a one of two drivers who stopped to help, O'Callahan added.
Speed may have been a factor in the crash, O'Callahan said.
The crash occurred just after 6:30 a.m. in the 9600 block of Phillips Road between Holland-Glenwood and Matteson Corners roads, O'Callahan said.
The vehicle -- a 2004 Volkswagen Jetta -- was traveling north on Phillips, a "hilly road," said O'Callahan. The car veered into a ditch on the west side of the road.
"As he reached the crest, the driver lost control of the vehicle, and it partially went into a ditch causing it to roll over," O'Callahan said. "It came to rest on its roof and burst into flames."
Drivers of two other vehicles traveling on Phillips spotted the car on fire, O'Callahan said.
One called 911 and the other and a nearby homeowner tried unsuccessfully to extinguish the blaze with fire extinguishers, O'Callahan said.
Delia was hospitalized in stable condition.
Pleace was not able to be pulled from the car because of the intensity of the fire, O'Callahan said.
"We don't believe weather played a factor, but the speed of the vehicle may have played a role," said O'Callahan.
State Police were assisted by fire companies from Holland and Colden.
