Marcia L. LaMorte, college administrator and counselor

lamorte2016_1124Marcia L. LaMorte, a college administrator and counselor, died Thursday in her Town of Tonawanda home after a battle with cancer. She was 91.

Born in Grundy Center, Iowa, the former Marcia L. Meyers earned degrees from Stephens College, Columbia, Mo., in 1945 and the University of Iowa in 1947. She received a master’s degree in student personnel administration from Teachers College, Columbia University.

Mrs. LaMorte worked as a resident adviser at Colorado College and in the personnel office at Fireman’s Fund Insurance in New York City before coming to Buffalo in 1951. Here she was assistant to the dean of students at Buffalo State College and director of the student union at D’Youville College.

She was an active member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority, the Greater Buffalo Alumnae Panhellenic and the Buffalo State College Association of Women. Also a member of the Twentieth Century Club, she participated in many committees and activities. She had been active with the Kenmore United Methodist Church since 1970.

She also played the piano and worked to promote children’s concerts by the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. She was an avid bridge player and traveled throughout Europe and Canada.

Her husband of 55 years, Charles P., former dean of students and vice president for student affairs at Buffalo State College, died in 2006.

Survivors include a daughter, Andrea Schaffer; a brother, William Meyers; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Kenmore United Methodist Church, 32 Landers Road, Kenmore.
