LOCKPORT - The Buffalo Skating Club, a figure skating organization in business since 1928, announced this week it is moving to Cornerstone Arena in Lockport as its permanent home ice.
The club, one of the oldest affiliates of U.S. Figure Skating, had been operating at Buffalo State College Ice Arena, North Buffalo Ice Rink and Lincoln Arena.
"In order to stay relevant and continue to grow, we are re-imagining ourselves as a premier Western New York skating club, with members from Buffalo, Batavia, Lockport and surrounding areas," said Kristin Riemer, president of the club board.
Dawn Ahlers, Cornerstone Arena figure skating director, said the club's move strengthens Lockport's fledgling figure skating program and improves the chances of Lockport someday hosting a major figure skating competition. "With the current trend of consolidation among USFS clubs and the provisional status that all new clubs face, the easy decision was to affiliate with an active club," she said.
