Lockport school bus driver with 32 children aboard charged with DWI

LOCKPORT -- A school bus driver was arrested by Niagara County sheriff deputies in the parking lot of a Lincoln Avenue bowling alley on Wednesday morning, on aggravated DWI and other charges, according to the Niagara County Sheriff's Office.

Diane M. Nelson, 58, of Lockport, appeared drunk when she was transporting 32 schoolchildren to the bowling alley, according to the principal of Anna Merritt School, who called the sheriff’s office, the sheriff's office reported.

When deputies arrived at about 10 a.m., they gave Nelson field sobriety tests, which she failed, the sheriff's office said.

Nelson was charged with a Leandra's Law felony driving while intoxicated charge for having underage children in her vehicle, operating a commercial vehicle while drunk, driving while ability impaired by drugs, and endangering the welfare of children, according to the sheriff's office.

She was remanded to the Niagara County Jail and faces court proceedings at 1 p.m. Tuesday.
