Sammy Watkins returns to Bills practice Wednesday (with video)

Bills star receiver Sammy Watkins returned to the field Wednesday for the first time since the team's Sept. 15 loss to the New York Jets.

Watkins has been on injured reserve with a foot injury since Sept. 30 and hasn't played since the Week Two loss. He's eligible to be activated Friday and could play in this Sunday's game against Jacksonville.

General manager Doug Whaley cast doubt on that in a Wednesday morning interview on WGR 550, saying "sometimes we need to save guys from themselves" and adding that they want Watkins for the long-term, not just Sunday.

Coach Rex Ryan, however, wouldn't rule Watkins out during his press briefing: "Is there a chance he could play? I hope so," he said.

Whaley said that Watkins had a CT scan this week before he was cleared to return.
