Niagara County Legislature calls special meeting to name coroner

LOCKPORT - Calvin W. Rhoney of Middleport is expected to be named Niagara County District 3 coroner at a special meeting of the Niagara County Legislature, called for 5:15 p.m. Tuesday in the County Courthouse, 175 Hawley St., Lockport.

Rhoney, a retired Sheriff's Office investigator and former supervisor and councilman in the Town of Royalton, is to replace Jacqueline E. DeCarlo, who was confirmed by the Legislature last Tuesday and resigned the next day, saying she hadn't realized the time demands of serving as coroner would interfere so much with her full-time job as a nurse at the County Jail.

The coroner post is considered part-time and pays $17,500 a year, but coroners can be on call 365 days a year. It's an elected position, although the Legislature has a committee studying whether to abolish the four coroner jobs and replace them with an appointed medical examiner, such as Erie County uses.

The District 3 position opened up when Kenneth V. Lederhouse retired Oct. 31 with 14 months left on his four-year term.
