Alfred University junior linebacker A.J. LiCata of Lake View was named one of 10 semifinalists for the Gagliardi Trophy, an annual award that recognizes excellence in Division III college football. The award is named in honor of the long-time coach John Gagliardi at St. John’s College in Minnesota.
LiCata, a Frontier High graduate, was second in the Empire 8 Conference with 110 tackles in 10 regular season games. In addition, he had nine tackles for loss, 3 1/2 sacks and one interception for the Saxons, who won the Empire 8 championship and defeated Bridgewater State (Mass.), 33-27, in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs last Saturday.
LiCata is a Dean’s List student at Alfred and active in campus and local community service activities.
A committee of 40 will make the final selection. A 41st vote will come from fans on D3football.com. The fan vote began online on Monday and will continue to Dec. 5. The trophy will be presented on Dec. 14 in Salem, Va., before the Division III championship weekend which culminates with the Stagg Bowl on Dec. 16.
