Pastor takes to the streets for needy families

The Rev. Eric Johns, pastor of the Buffalo Dream Center, will be living on the streets of Buffalo from Monday through Friday to help families in need this holiday season.

It will be the 18th year that Johns has slept outside and in homeless shelters, and eaten at soup kitchens to draw attention to the plight of the poor. This year he will be joined for some of his children for a portion of the time.

Michelle Johns, his wife, will also spend 24 hours on the streets from Wednesday to Thanksgiving Day Thursday. She will be accompanied by a group of women from the Dream Center, 286 Lafayette Ave.

Their efforts will raise awareness about Boxes of Love, a Christmas campaign with a goal of providing food to more than 3,000 families during the holidays. The campaign will also distribute thousands of wrapped presents to needy children.

"My family and I do this every year," said Johns. "We cannot imagine a December without all of the volunteers coming together to make Christmas special for thousands of families."
