Gasport man admits burglary at Lockport business

LOCKPORT - Robert A. Abernathy, who has been to state prison twice before, will return there after pleading guilty to a burglary Friday.

Abernathy, 49, of East Avenue, Gasport, entered Great Lakes Media Blasting on Cold Springs Road in Lockport between Jan. 30 and Feb. 1, Niagara County Deputy District Attorney Doreen M. Hoffmann said.

Abernathy, who faces a maximum four-year sentence for attempted third-degree burglary, went behind bars for robbery in 2003 and burglary in 2007. He told County Judge Sara Sheldon he was diagnosed as bipolar 10 years ago and has been on and off his medication.

"Every time I'm off it, I'm in front of you," Abernathy told the judge, who scheduled sentencing for Jan. 20.
