'Code Blue' homeless shelters to open when temperature drops to 15 degrees

Buffalo's Code Blue program to protect the homeless from extreme cold is being expanded this year, with three shelters available when temperatures dip to 15 degrees or below.

From now through March 15,  Cold Blue shelters will be located at:

  • The Matt Urban Hope Center, 385 Paderewski Drive
  • St. Luke's Mission of Mercy, 325 Walden Ave.
  • Harbor House, 241 Genessee St.

Last year, Code Blue served over 600 people, according to Buffalo Mayor Byron W. Brown.

The program has significantly reduced the death rate among Buffalo's homeless population since its inception in 2009, according to the Western New York  Coalition for the Homeless.

The coalition is asking for donations from the public to assist the Code Blue shelters. Items needed include cots, blankets and a van for outreach efforts.

Anyone interested in making a donation is asked to contact the Coalition for the Homeless. More information is available at the organization's website,
