St. Mary's girls win 18th state Catholic volleyball title

St. Mary’s of Lancers won its 18th state Catholic girls volleyball championship Saturday with a four-set triumph over Kellenberg Memorial of Uniondale in the final match. The Lancers defeated Kellenberg 24-25, 20-25, 25-21 and 25-15.

Earlier in pool play, St. Mary’s and Kellenberg split a pair of matches with the Lancers wining 25-17 after a 25-20 loss.

Coach Don Pieczynski’s team rallied from that by sweeping Maria Regina and host St. Francis Prep in pool play, then defeating St. Francis, 25-10 and 25-16 in the semifinals.

As a team, the Legends hit for an impressive .311 average with Caitlyn Meyer at .414 and Hanna Mulhern at .436.

For the tournament, Meyer had 52 kills, Summer Slade had 31 kills and 39 digs, Mulhern had 30 kills, Caroline Zanghi had eight blocks, Jillian Vitale 130 assists and Gina Appenheimer 46 digs.
