John Szczerbinski of North Tonawanda turned in Sunday's high round, 1,894 for eight games (236.8 average) to climb to fifth place in the qualifying standings for the USBC U.S. Open tournament at Southpoint Bowling Center in Las Vegas, Nev. The former Wichita State start stood in fifth place after two of the three squads had bowled their third and final qualifying rounds on Sunday. He had games of 224,247, 239,215, 238,2 44, 256 and 231 and his 24-game total was 95 pins behind the leader, Martin Larsen of Sweden.
Brad Angelo of Lockport was also above the cutline after hs shot 1,696 Sunday for 5,088 total. Defending champion Ryan Ciminelli of Cheektowaga bowled in the late squad. However, Ciminelli was well below the anticipated cut line for the fourth round of qualifying.
