Edwin “Andy” Anderson, a Korean War veteran and 39-year Nichols School coach, died Oct. 22 under hospice care in Hudson, Fla. He was 87.
Mr. Anderson became involved in sports when he played basketball during his senior year at Canisius High School. He also played basketball for an Army Special Services team.
He was an all-star baseball player for the University of Buffalo and later was named assistant coach. He played professional baseball in the St. Louis Cardinals’ minor league system.
In 1956, Mr. Anderson was hired at Nichols, where he taught English and coached basketball, baseball and golf for the next 39 years. He served on the pre-Olympics committee selecting amateur high school and college students to compete in the games. He also was president of the Western New York State Referees Association.
Mr. Anderson’s family said he was known for engaging in spirited arguments with officials.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Eleanor; two sons, Brian and Christopher; two daughters, Elizabeth Burtness and Lucille; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Services will be held in the spring.
