Buffalo State women’s soccer going to NCAAs

Melissa Smith (Niagara-Wheatfield) scored in the 32nd minute and the goal held up the rest of the way in Buffalo State’s 1-0 win over Geneseo Saturday in the SUNYAC women’s soccer championship game at Coyer Field. The Bengals qualified for an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament and will play a first round game next Friday or Saturday. It was the 15th goal of the season for Smith, a senior forward.

Geneseo had its best chance to tie the game moments after Smith’s goal when a shot from a sharp angle was wide of the left post. The Blue Knights started the second half aggressively, but the Bengals soon regained control and allowed only two shots in the last 25 minutes. Freshman goalkeeper Taylor Carillo made three saves for her 13th shutout of the season. Buffalo State (17-1-2) added to its school women’s soccer record for most wins in a season.

Smith’s goal came after freshman Jada Sargeant steered a bouncing ball through two defenders and Smith left-footed it off the left post and in.

The Bengals had a 10-9 edge in shots and a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks. Goalkeeper Emily Janiszewski (Orchard Park) made four saves for Geneseo (9-3-5).
