Ana Davies left no doubt that Clarence was going to get another crack at a girls soccer state title.
The senior scored four goals to pace the Red Devils in a 4-1 win over Section V’s Victor in the Class AA Far West Regional Finals at Geneseo on Friday night. Davies, who is committed to play at Division I Marist next year, gave Clarence a 1-0 lead in the first half. She added three more in the second as Clarence built a 4-0 lead.
Victor (15-4-1) scored late in the game.
Davies now has 38 goals on the season, leading the Red Devils to their third straight berth in the New York State semifinals.
This was a rematch of last year’s Far West Regional, which Clarence took by a 1-0 score.
The Red Devils (19-1) are on a 17-game winning streak and will play in the semifinals at Tompkins Cortland Community College on Nov. 12. Clarence plays the winner of Saturday’s regional between Arlington (Section I, Dutchess and Westchester counties) and Monroe Woodbury (Section 9, Orange, Sullivan and Ulster counties). Clarence has lost in the state semifinals the last two years.
Panama wins v-ball title
There’s a new champion in Section VI Class D girls volleyball, as second-seeded Panama outlasted North Collins in the title match at Jamestown Community College.
Panama won the title in five games, winning the first two, 25-11, 25-13. North Collins, which was ranked fourth the latest small schools poll, came back to tie the match with wins of 25-22 and 25-19. In the final set, it was Panama which came out with a 25-21 win.
Panama was ranked No. 9 in the small school poll.
Last year’s sectional, and eventual state champ, Portville, moved to Class C this year.
Red Devils advance
Third-seeded Clarence defeated Frontier in four games inthe Division I boys volleyball semifinals at Lackawanna High School.
The Red Devils (20-4) won the first two games – 25-22, 25-22 – before second-seeded Frontier came back for a 25-15 win. With a 25-20 win in the fourth game, the Red Devils advanced to the title match.
Henry Payne led Clarence with 27 kills while Tyler White had nine kills and Shawn Trznadel 37 assists.
“We weren’t blocking well at all and in the fourth game were able to get some blocks and slow down their offense a little bit,” Clarence coach Kevin Starr said. “That was what made the difference. We were giving them too many swings. Give them all the credit in the world. They just ripped us in the third. The kids just really adjusted well in the fourth.”
Clarence will play top-seeded Lockport which defeated defending champ Orchard Park in five games, 25-16, 18-25, 21-25, 25-22, 25-20. Marc Bixby had 12 kills, 20 assists and 15 digs for the Lions. Sean Denniston had 28 assits and 11 digs while Jesse Donorovich had 15 kills and 10 digs.

On the boys side, three games will be at Sweet Home beginning at 1:30 p.m. with Class D as Pine Valley (17-1) faces Alfred-Almond (17-1-2). The Panthers are on a 16-game win streak, spearheaded by seniors Tyler West (32 goals, 12 assists). In Class B, I-Prep/Grover (19-1) meets Livonia (17-3) at 4 p.m. The trio of Pa Lu (32 goals, 20 assists), Abdullahi Hussein (20 goals, 16 assists) and Ahmed Hassoon (19 goals, 6 assists) are the catalysts for the Presidents. The day concludes at 6:30 p.m. with the Class AA matchup between Clarence (16-2-1) and Fairport (17-1-1). Sophomore Ross Showalter (19 goals) and senior Sam Sutherland (14 goals, 6 assists) lead the Red Devils.
Four girls teams will play at Geneseo beginning at 3 p.m. with undefeated Maple Grove (19-0) facing Geneseo (17-3-1) in Class C with the Red Dragons led by Adrianna Carlson (22 goals, 14 assists). In Class B, Newfane (15-2) meets Palmyra-Macedon (17-1-1) at 4 p.m. The Panthers have outscored opponents 18-1 in the postseason. Junior Kayleigh Daniels has 16 goals and 12 assists. North Collins (13-3-1) faces Wheatland Chili (19-1) at 5:30 p.m. in Class D. Emma Kron is a 20-goal scorer, Class A features Grand Island (19-1) vs. Spencerport (19-0-1) at 6:30. The Vikings are led by Madisyn Pezzino (73 goals, 17 assists).
