One person in custody after armed standoff in Wheatfield

WHEATFIELD - A person was taken into custody following an armed standoff with police in Wheatfield less than an hour after law enforcement issued a "shelter in place" warning.

State Police and the Niagara County Sheriff's Office were facing off with an armed person who was barricaded inside a building on Niagara Falls Boulevard near Ward Road.

A "shelter in place" order had been issued by the Niagara County Sheriff's Office for an area along Niagara Falls Boulevard between Ward Road and Mavis Drive due to what was initially described as "a police incident." An employee at Wheatfield Pediatrics told a Buffalo News reporter the standoff is in a home on the south side of Niagara Falls Boulevard.

Residents in that area were told to remain inside their homes until further notice, according to the warning issued at 12:37 p.m.

Niagara Falls Boulevard is closed to vehicular traffic in that area and motorists were advised to avoid the area.

No further details were immediately available from police.
