As playoffs continue, get yourself ready for today's #PrepTalkLive action with everything you need to know about the day ahead in high school sports.
What to watch for Thursday
1. Boys soccer Class A-1 final - 1-Grand Island vs. 6-McKinley, 7:30 p.m. at Sweet Home
The No. 1 large school Vikings (18-0) have been the most dominant team in Western New York this year with a whopping +110 goal differential (114 goals for, 4 against). Led by Garrett Robinson (30 goals, 28 assists) and John Griffin (23 goals, 11 assists), this potent offense is the only one in Western New York to reach the 100-goal plateau.
No. 6 large school McKinley (14-4) has had as tough a road to the final as any. The Macks beat two top 10 large schools in No. 10 Hamburg and No. 8 Sweet Home on its way to tonight's showdown. Zakaria Shiabi leads McKinley with 22 goals on the season.
2. Girls soccer Class B-2 final - 2-Fredonia vs. 5-Wilson, 6 p.m. at Williamsville North
The only two losses on Fredonia's (15-2) record this year have come to Maple Grove, which at 18-0 is the only unbeaten girls soccer team left in WNY. Sophomore Laural Erick has an impressive 34 goals for the Hillbillies this season, good for a tie for fourth in Section VI.
The Lakewomen (11-5-2) counter with senior Kayla Neumann, whose 21 goals and 11 assists have directly contributed to 32 of Wilson's 50 goals this season. Emily Kelly's as solid as they come between the pipes. Kelly last year as a sophomore was the driving force behind Wilson's state runner-up finish.
3. Boys soccer Class A-2 final - 1-Lew-Port vs. 6-Iroquois, 5 p.m. at Sweet Home
Lew-Port might just be the most under-the-radar No. 1 seed in Section VI. Why? Because the No. 5 large school Lancers happen to play in the same league as aforementioned Grand Island during the regular season. Josh Smith (13 goals) and Dominic Dragone (12 goals) lead a balanced offense.
Iroquois (7-8-3), meanwhile, truly did come from under the radar. This sixth seed doesn't have a 10-goal scorer on its roster, and it obviously didn't need one to score upsets over 3-Olean and 2-Starpoint on its way to today's final.
4. Girls soccer Class B-2 final - 3-Newfane vs. 5-East Aurora, 8 p.m. at Williamsville North
The Panthers (13-2) have had a dominant season to this point outscoring their opposition 63-10. Their lone loss to WNY competition came at Albion on Sept. 30. Newfane has run off five wins in a row since, outscoring its opponents 28-2 (including three seven-goal games).
The Lady Blue Devils (9-8) looks to be the ones to bring a soccer title back to East Aurora after the boys team lost in the B-1 final yesterday. Junior twins Maggie Crosson (11 goals) and Makenna Crosson (10 goals) are a dynamic duo to watch for on the Blue Devils.
5. Field hockey - Class A semifinals at Orchard Park
Two-seed Clarence (8-5-3) and three-seed Orchard Park (8-8) start off the evening at 4:45 p.m. Alyssa Andres (9 goals) and the Red Devils shut out the Quakers, 4-0, in the second game of the season for both teams. Senior Penny Lenard leads OP with 13 goals and 14 assists.
Top-seed Williamsville North (11-5) looks to complete the season sweep over 4-Lancaster (5-10-2) at 6:45 p.m. Jenna Piotrowski scored twice for the Spartans in a 3-0 shutout win on Oct. 13. Angela Conte's the leading scorer for the Legends with seven goals.
