As playoffs continue, get yourself ready for today's #PrepTalkLive action with everything you need to know about the day ahead in high school sports.
What to watch for Wednesday
1. Boys soccer - Class B finals
Sweet Home's once again the place to be for boys soccer this evening.
1-Lackawanna (15-2-1) and 6-Lafayette (10-6) kick things off in the Class B-2 final at 5 p.m. Both of these teams shouldn't be surprised by this level of competition. The three games the No. 3 small school Steelers didn't win this year all came against top 10 large schools (losses to No. 8 Sweet Home and No. 3 Lancaster, tie to No. 10 St. Joe's). Of the Violets' six losses this year, two each came to No. 1 small small I-Prep/Grover and Riverside, which was ranked at one point this season, and another came to No. 6 large school McKinley. The only loss that may be somewhat suspect was to Hutch-Tech.
The top two small schools in all of Western New York then duke it out in the Class B-1 final at 7:30 p.m. 1-I-Prep (17-1) and 2-East Aurora (14-3-1) is a rematch of last year's overall Class B regional qualifier, which was won in overtime by East Aurora. Returning All-WNYer Pa Lu (28 goals, 16 assits) and the Presidents are riding a 17-game winning streak since a season-opening loss to St. Joe's. The Blue Devils feature a newer, younger cast of characters, led by juniors Pat Philips (20 goals) and Bryce Schiltz (15 goals).
2. Field hockey - Class B and C semifinals
Six of the top 10 field hockey teams suit up for semifinal action Wednesday.
Four of them, including four of the top five in the latest poll, play in the Class B semis at Orchard Park.
1-Iroquois (17-0) and 4-Williamsville East (13-3-1) start at 5:30 p.m. The top-ranked Chiefs topped the fifth-ranked Flames, 3-1, in their regular season meeting on Oct. 7. 2-Williamsville South (15-1-1) and 3-Pioneer (15-2), tied for No. 2 in the coaches poll this week, follow at 7:30 p.m. The Billies won a 1-0 decision against Pioneer on Oct. 17 on a first-minute goal by senior Abby Ferenczy.
Meanwhile, Clarence hosts the Class C semifinals.
1-Akron (13-0) and 5-Eden (7-10) square off at 5:30 p.m. The No. 4 Tigers, one of two unbeatens in WNY, are led by Heather Cummings' 16 goals and Abigail Stone's 13. The Raiders have four multiple-goal scorers, led by Sam Mason's three. 2-Barker (10-3) and 3-Wilson (9-4) play in the 7:30 p.m. nightcap. The Lakwomen broke what's thought to be an 18-year winless streak against the No. 9 Raiders with a 2-0 victory at Barker on Oct. 13.
3. Girls soccer - Class AA semifinals
Depew's the site for this evening's girls soccer semifinals.
2-Williamsville North (12-3-1) and 3-Niagara-Wheatfield (13-3-1) start it off at 5 p.m. The Spartans, who are 12-1-1 since opening the season with a par of losses, are led offensively by 10-goal scorers Lianna Vansice and Candice Kasahara. The Falcons, winners of their last six, have a 12-goal scorer in Samantha Maghrak.
1-Clarence (16-1) and 5-Frontier (8-8-1) then renew acquaintances at 7 p.m. Anna Davies (33 goals, 18 assists) and the Red Devils haven't lost to a WNY school this season, and that includes 4-1 and 1-0 wins against Frontier in ECIC I play. Falcons goalie Brianna Stegmeier had 12 saves in that close 1-0 loss on Oct. 11, so another stellar outing would be key to an upset.
4. Boys volleyball - St. Francis at Canisius, 6 p.m.
The No. 5 Red Raiders (6-1) and No. 1 Crusaders (7-0) battle it out for the Monsignor Martin regular season title. Canisius, which swept No. 2 Clarence in a highly-anticipated match yesterday, dropped the second set in a four-set win at St. Francis when the two teams played on Sept. 28.
5. Girls volleyball - Section VI playoffs
The girls volleyball teams of Section VI get in on the playoff action with 18 prequarterfinal games on the schedule. Among the 8-9 matchups include Kenmore East and Starpoint in Class A and Tonawanda-Medina in B-2. The full sectional schedule can be found below.
