Ursula Cullen Schifferle, educator

June 9, 1941 - Oct. 20, 2016

Ursula Cullen Schifferle of Lancaster died Oct. 20 following a long illness. She was 75.

Born in Buffalo, the former Ursula Cullen was a Mount Mercy Academy and Buffalo State College graduate.

Following graduation, she began a long career in teaching. She taught at School 43 for 37 years and in that time served her students and mentored new teachers as well as representing her colleagues as a union delegate. An accomplished chef, she also taught gourmet cooking classes for many years at Emerson Vocational School.

Outside of school, she served her community through her support of the St. Jude Center. She lent her expertise to fundraising events and also provided homemade meals for the families of cancer patients staying at the Kevin Guest House. In her Lancaster community, she served on the board of the Lancaster Opera House for several decades, holding both vice-president and president positions.

She met her husband of 32 years, William, while working at School 43. Together they enjoyed traveling and throwing theme parties, including a 100th birthday party for Julia Child featuring her authentic recipes.

Mrs. Schifferle is survived by her husband, William, and sisters Laetitia Bourke and Celine Crabbe.
