Coffee with political candidates scheduled in Amherst

A handful of candidates running for Congress, district attorney, State Senate and Assembly will participate in a "coffee with the candidates" forum Oct. 28 in Amherst.

The free 9 a.m. event at the Amherst Senior Center, 370 John James Audubon Parkway, is sponsored by the Amherst Senior Center and the League of Women Voters of Buffalo/Niagara.

Candidates expected to participate include Rep. Brian Higgins, a Democrat, and Shelly Schratz, a Republican, who are running in the 26th Congressional District in Erie and Niagara counties; John Flynn, a Democrat running for Erie County District Attorney; State Sen. Michael Ranzenhofer, a Republican, and Democratic challenger Thomas Loughran, who are running in the 61st Senate District; and State Assemblyman Ray Walters, a Republican, and Democratic challenger Steven Meyer, who are running in the 146th Assembly District.

League member Anne Marie Malachowski will moderate the event, which will include candidates presenting opening statements, answering written questions from the audience and offering closing statements.
