Rex Ryan not backtracking on decision to play LeSean McCoy

Rex Ryan doesn't sound like he has any regrets about playing running back LeSean McCoy on Sunday.

The Buffalo Bills' top offensive weapon left in the third quarter of a 28-25 loss to the Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium after feeling tightness in his left hamstring. McCoy was questionable going into the game after being hurt in practice Wednesday.

"The decision to play LeSean, as I mentioned was, he got clearance from medical personnel. That’s a variety of tests – tons of tests," Ryan said. "The player needs to sign off on it, so it’s not just, ‘Hey, the medical says you’re OK. You’re going out there.’ So LeSean wanted to play. He felt like he was ready to play. We took him to pregame and he was running routes at full speed and burst and things like that.

"We thought that he was ready to go, 100 percent ready to go. I think that’s why we played him."

Should the same situation present itself in the future, Ryan indicated he would do the same thing.

"If every box is checked, then yes," he said. "If any box is not checked, then no way are we going to play him. We’ve said that from Day One about any player."

As for whether McCoy will be available in Week Eight when the New England Patriots visit New Era Field for what Ryan called a "critical" game, well, we'll have to wait and see about that.

"We’ll see how the week unfolds," the coach said. "As soon as he said he had tightness in the hamstring, we took him out of the game. … That’s where he’s at. We’ll see how he progresses."

Wide receiver Marquise Goodwin is in the league's concussion protocol after he was hurt with 3:44 remaining in the fourth quarter trying to make a catch along the right sideline. Goodwin's helmet appeared to bounce off the turf as he went to the ground.

"He gets hit in the head, but that wasn’t intentional at all," Ryan said. "It’s just a guy making a play on the football. Those things happen. This league, you know, it’s a physical game. It’s not for everybody, but it doesn’t have to be dangerous. This is one of those unfortunate things."

Ryan also provided injury updates on the following players:

• DT Marcell Dareus (hamstring): "Hopefully this will be the week we get him on the field, but he's still got that hamstring deal."

• WR Robert Woods (foot): "He's making progress. He's got that foot injury, but he's making real progress."

• OT Seantrel Henderson (back): "Working his way back. Feels much better, so hopefully we'll have him."
