Partially undressed driver charged with DWI in Niagara Falls

NIAGARA FALLS - Police who pulled over a suspected drunken driver on Saturday night encountered a Cheektowaga woman driving her car in a state of partial undress.

City police had received reports about a possible intoxicated driver shortly after 7:30 p.m., and when Sharon Turner's Chevrolet Equinox was seen operating erratically, officers stopped her on Cayuga Drive beneath the LaSalle Expressway overpass, according to a police report.

The officers reported they could smell alcohol and Turner's speech was slurred. Police needed Turner to step out of the car to perform field sobriety tests.

But she wasn't wearing pants or underwear at the time of the traffic stop, the report said.

Turner, 58, told the officers she was driving home from shopping at the Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls USA, even though her vehicle was driving in a direction back towards the mall. An open, half-empty bottle of Jose Cuervo tequila was on the floor near the front passenger seat, according to the report.

After putting pants on and stepping out of her SUV, Turner failed three field sobriety tests and she was taken into custody, according to the report.

As she was being transported to police headquarters, Turner "screamed profanities and derogatory racial insults" at the officer who was driving. When being fingerprinted, she spit in an officer's face, according to the report.

She refused to submit to a breath test, and even though she had $612 cash in her possession initially refused to post her own bail or call for  a ride when given the option by officers.

She eventually acquiesced when a family member arrived. Turner was charged with driving while intoxicated, refusing a breath test and consuming alcohol in a motor vehicle. She was given a court date of Nov. 2.
