Was there once an ambitious time when you could sidle up to an attractive single, gaze into his or her eyes and declaratively coo, “get out of my dreams, get into my car” as a brazenly bold pick-up line?
If there was, Billy Ocean was listening. Performing at 8 p.m. Oct. 29 in the Seneca Niagara Casino Bear’s Den, the Trinidad-born Brit slapped this seemingly ridiculous barroom pitch on his 1988 chart-topping single of the same name, and the proposition became his. Nearly 30 years later, it’s still a tune popular with '80s loyalists, and one that's car-related double entendres and delirious sax solo injects a dosage of unexpected (and kitschy) joy into listeners, regardless of age.
But now touring on this year’s “Here You Are”— which features Ocean's interpretations of Bob Marley’s “No Woman No Cry” and Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come,” songs that influenced his career — the Grammy-winning R&B artist is dealing out much more MTV-era nostalgia.
Does this mean he’ll forego stirring renditions of past smashes “Caribbean Queen” and “Suddenly,” or refrain from delivering a Danny DeVito-less “When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going”? No chance. Like the car-related rocker, they’re his, too, sure to soothe old and new couples off the Falls this weekend.
