Poetry and Literature Calendar for Oct. 23-29

 Sunday, 4 p.m.: Just Buffalo Writing Center Showcase Series reading featuring young writers Hemingway L. and  Jackie V. Just Buffalo Writing Center, second floor, 468 Washington St.

   Monday, 6:30 p.m.: BABEL at Betty's: A book discussion of novelist Laila Lalami’s "The Moor’s Account" facilitated by Faizan Haq, the founder and publisher of A specialist in Islamic studies, Haq teaches at both the University at Buffalo and SUNY Buffalo State, and is one of the founding members of the Center for the Study of Islam and Democracy (CSID). Lalami will visit Buffalo on Nov. 9 to appear in Just Buffalo Literary Center's BABEL Lecture Series. Betty’s Restaurant, 370 Virginia St. $10/$5 Just Buffalo members.

Monday, 7 p.m.: Reading and book signing by screenwriter and debut novelist Mike Roberts, a Buffalo native and author of "Cannibals in Love" (FSG Originals, 2016).  Talking Leaves Books, 3158 Main St.

     Tuesday, 7 p.m.: SUNY Empire State College Appletree Series open reading featuring poet John Marvin.  Additional reading slots available. Empire State College, Appletree Business Park, 2875 Union Road, Cheektowaga.

  Wednesday, 7 p.m.:  Circleformance Series reading featuring poets Elaine Chamberlain and  Gene Grabiner, with a musical performance by classical guitarists Max Goldhirsch and Anya Zions, joined by their teacher, poet and guitarist Gunilla Kester. Wednesday, 7:30 p.m.: Readings at the RIC Series presents a 35th anniversary celebration of Burchfield Penney Art Center's "New Voices" competition (selected by then University at Buffalo Gray Chair Professor of Poetry and Letters Robert Creeley) featuring poets Anne Elezabeth Pluto, Gary Eddy, Jorge Guitart and Peter Siedlecki.      Thursday, 5:30 p.m.: Reading by and discussion with British poet, critic and scholar Nancy Gaffield, senior lecturer in creative writing at the University of Kent in Canterbury, England. Her books of poetry include "Tokaido Road" (CB editions, 2011; adapted as a libretto for the chamber opera of the same name by Nicola LeFanu in 2014), "Owhere" (Templar, 2012), and "Continental Drift" (Shearsman, 2014). Friday, 7 p.m.: 4th Friday Poetry Series reading hosted by Fred Whitehead and featuring poet Lynn Ciesielski. Additional reading slots available. Dog Ears Bookstore, 688 Abbott Road. $2.

   Saturday, 7 p.m.: Empire State Poetry Slam. Teams of poets from throughout New York State come together to compete for the title of Empire State Poetry Slam champion and a $700 grand prize.
