Niagara Falls man avoids jail in teen sex case

LOCKPORT - A man whose trial on statutory rape charges ended in a hung jury was sentenced Friday to three years' probation for his subsequent guilty plea to child endangerment.

Richard W. Ackerson, 41, of 85th Street, Niagara Falls, entered the misdemeanor plea Aug. 26, about two months after the jury in his trial deadlocked. Ackerson was accused of having sex with a 16-year-old girl in his home on the night of June 20-21, 2015. He will not have to register as a sex offender.

"There's something very odd about you. Something is off," Niagara County Judge Sara Sheldon told Ackerson. She said she hoped Ackerson would obtain help during his probation.

"I deeply regret my actions," said Ackerson.
