The Sabres are using their break in the schedule as a chance to get three young players some work in Rochester.
Buffalo has sent defenseman Casey Nelson and forwards Hudson Fasching and Nicholas Baptiste to the Amerks. The Sabres don’t play again until Tuesday, while the Amerks have back-to-back games Friday and Saturday. The trio is expected to play in both after arriving home from Vancouver on Friday morning.
The demotion will mean much-needed ice time for Nelson. The defenseman hasn’t played since appearing in the Sabres’ opener Oct. 13. He was a healthy scratch for the last three games.
Fasching was scratched in the last two games to make room for Baptiste.
To open roster space, the Amerks have sent forward Justin Kea and defenseman Paul Geiger to Elmira of the ECHL.
The Sabres are staying away from the rink Friday and Saturday. Their next practice is scheduled for Sunday morning. They visit Philadelphia on Tuesday.
