Stop spewing hatred all over social media
I’m not the best Catholic. I don’t attend church weekly and I forget my daily prayers, so this isn’t meant to berate others. But I’ve been struggling to understand how Catholicism and Christianity as a whole have translated into such extreme conservatism on the political stage.
I’ve seen many comments and likes from my religious friends all over social media that indicate homophobia, transphobia and xenophobia. I understand that the Bible addresses or forbids many of these things. But it also says, “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.” I think God’s overarching message is one of love and acceptance.
It is not our job to force laws that support what the Bible says. It is not our job to be the judge and jury; that responsibility falls to God. I don’t believe he cares whether we supported policies against gay marriage or transgender rights. I believe what God truly cares about is that we treat everyone we meet – black, Hispanic, Muslim, gay, transgender, etc. – with the love and kindness they deserve. I think that is the essence of God’s message, one that has seemingly been lost in the minuscule details of politics.
I hope church leaders focus on this so we can love all of God’s children and end the hatred spewing from so many keyboards.
