Menacing Thruway signs provide a lousy welcome
I recently traveled out of state to visit relatives. Upon my return, what was the first thing I saw entering New York? A toll booth. In all of my travels, this was the first one I saw. Next came a series of signs: “Toll evaders will be prosecuted.” “State aircraft used in speed enforcement.” “Fines doubled for speeding in work zones.”
Is this really the message we want to give our out-of-state visitors? It seems our highway department just assumes everyone is a speed freak and a criminal. Why not just put up a sign, “Welcome to New York. Get out your wallet”?
