Homeroom Announcements: Wednesday's big games & more

Get yourself ready for today's #PrepTalkLive action with everything you need to know about the day ahead in high school sports.

What to watch for Wednesday

1. Boys soccer quarterfinals

Class A-1 three-seed Hamburg (11-2-3) hosts six-seed McKinley (12-4) under the lights at 7:30 p.m. These young Bulldogs, ranked No. 7 in the large schools poll this week, were a surprise of sorts with just about half of its roster consisting of underclassmen. McKinley has quality wins against Wilson and Riverside, which are both ranked in this week's small schools poll.

Other top matchups:
- AA: 5-Niagara-Wheatfield (9-5-2) at 4-Orchard Park (10-4-2), 5 p.m.
- A-1: 5-Williamsville South (8-7-1) at 4-Williamsville East (11-5), 3:30 p.m.

2. Girls soccer quarterfinals

Familiar CCAA East foes 6-Portville (11-4-2) and 3-Allegany-Limestone (14-2) will meet for the third time this year in the Class C quarterfinals. The Gators picked up 2-1 and 8-1 wins in the regular season meetings.

Other top matchup:
- B-1: 6-Springville (8-5-1) at 3-Newfane (11-2), 3:30 p.m.

3. Field hockey - Williamsville North at Pioneer, 5 p.m.

No. 5 Williamsville North (11-4) heads to No. 3 Pioneer (13-2). Emma Roland and Shannon Quinlan lead the Spartans with 14 and 11 goals, respectively. Brittany Baker (18 goals) and Riley McMahon (14 goals) head the Panthers offense.

4. Girls volleyball - Grand Island at Lockport, 5 p.m.

No. 4 large school Grand Island (13-0) is looking to finish of its Niagara Frontier League schedule unscathed. The Vikings beat No. 8 Lockport (10-2) in straight sets back on Sept. 20, but the Lions haven't lost since.

5. Girls volleyball - Orchard Park at Williamsville South, 6:30 p.m.

The No. 10 large school Billies hosting the No. 5 Quakers. OP sits at 7-7, but its losses have come to top-notch competition: Clarence (2), Lancaster (2), Frontier, Hamburg and St. Mary's. South (9-6) is in the same boat with losses to Will East (2), Hamburg (2), Lockport and Niagara-Wheatfield, so this should be a quality nonleauge match between teams looking to get on a roll heading into the playoffs.
