Expectations are low for Canisius and Niagara men's basketball teams in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference this season.
Canisius was picked ninth out of 11 and Niagara was picked last in a preseason poll of the league's coaches, released on Tuesday.
Canisius senior forward Phil Valenti was the only Griff or Purple Eagle on the preseason all-conference teams. Valenti was named to the third team.
Canisius finished seventh last season with a record of 14-19 overall and 8-12 in conference. Niagara finished 10th at 7-25 and 5-15.
The preseason MAAC first team: Iona forward Jordan Washington, Marist guard Khallid Hart, Monmouth guard Justin Robinson, Siena forward Brett Bisping and Siena forward Javion Ogunyemi. Robinson is the preseason player of the year.
On the second team: Fairfield guard Tyler Nelson, Manhattan guard Rich Williams, Monmouth guard Micah Seaborn, Rider forward Kahlil Thomas and St. Peter’s center Quadir Welton.
On the third team: Canisius' Valenti, Iona forward Deyshonee Much, St. Peter’s guard Trevis Wyche, St. Peter’s guard Antwon Portley and Siena guard Marquis Wright.
Monmouth, the defending regular-season champion, was picked to win the MAAC.
