Niagara Falls man avoids state prison in beating of toddler

LOCKPORT - Antonio M. Daniels, who spanked his girlfriend's 2 1/2 year-old son so severely that the boy's entire buttocks were bruised purple, was sentenced Monday to five years on probation, with weekends in the county jail for the next four months.

Niagara County Judge Sara Sheldon sentenced Daniels for the April 15, 2015 crime in Niagara Falls.

Daniels, 23, of Willow Avenue, Niagara Falls, pleaded guilty in January to a reduced charge of attempted second-degree assault, a felony. Sentencing was delayed for him to complete parenting classes and an evaluation by the county Mental Health Department, which concluded he did not need psychiatric treatment.

"I made a mistake, a big mistake, and I learned from it," Daniels said.
